Mobile Phone Forensics, also known as Mobile Phone Analysis, is a form of science concerned with the systematic examination of mobile phone handsets and all attached media, such as SIM cards and memory storage cards. It is similar to Computer Forensics in that a wide variety of data can be retrieved, including call registers, text messages and multimedia messages.

With approximately 70% of adults estimated to own a mobile phone, it is perhaps not surprising that Mobile Phone Forensic Analysis is being used in an increasingly large number of civil and legal matters.

• Automatic SIM card and handset memory analysis:
  
  This form of analysis is suitable when the mobile telephone is supported by one or more pieces of forensic software, which allows the phone's data to be extracted automatically. A manual verification is then performed to confirm the extracted data is complete and correct.


• Manual SIM card and handset memory analysis:
  
  This form of Mobile Phone Analysis is used when the mobile telephone is not supported by any forensic software, or the support offered is limited to such a degree that very little data can be extracted automatically.
  
  In such cases, the analyst must manually examine a handset and digitally record each of the screens. All images taken will be produced both electronically and as a paper based report, while any audio or video located will be recorded and presented in a widely playable format.


• Memory card analysis:
  
  If a memory card is found within a handset, this will be analysed using specialist Computer Forensic techniques and equipment. Analysis can include the recovery of deleted information such as movies, images and voice recordings, if the remit of the investigation warrants such activity.
