Case Study: Cell Site Survey and Analysis

25 January 2019

IntaForensics were contacted by an SIO from the serious investigation’s unit of Sussex Police to assess the possibility of IntaForensics responding urgently to assist on an Attempted Murder investigation. A significant part of the investigation related to the movement of 6 suspects prior to the offence, their location at the time of the offence and their movements after the offence was committed.

Due to the urgency of the request, one of IntaForensics’ experts (Carl Osborne) – who’s previous experience as a leading Digital Media Investigator and Cell Site (RFPS) expert – created a Forensic Cell Site Strategy for the SIO and was deployed within 24 hours to the location to commence Cell Site surveys in relation to the 6 suspects.

IntaForensics were able to survey the scene of the offence and other locations at very short notice and provided court ready reports for each suspect. The Cell Site Analyst, Carl Osborne, also gave evidence at the trial and provided information which assisted the court and jury in their understanding of the attribution and use of cell sites by mobile phones.

The expert evidence provided by Carl allowed the prosecution to prove to the court that the offenders had colluded and had travelled either together or separately to a pre-arranged location in order to commit an extremely serious assault which almost ended in the loss of a life.

The trial resulted in the conviction of 5 people for offences of GBH, Blackmail and conspiracy to commit GBH, with the five defendants receiving prison sentences totalling 45 years.
