Phishing Scam hooks thieves more than £1 Million

12 December 2011

Police have cracked a ring of thieves who stole over £1 million from students by tricking them into revealing details of their student loans.

Six arrests have been made four unnamed men and two unnamed women on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud in London, Manchester and Bolton.

The scam came to light in August of this year when emails sent to students were shown to authorities. The emails asked for updates on the details of the loans through a “convincing but bogus website”

Some students falling for the scam also found their bank accounts emptied with sums ranging from £1000 to £5000 at a time.

The case itself is a good example of the increasingly target approach cyber criminals are taking using social engineering to pick on specific groups of people.

The bust which shows that good results can be gained when working in partnership to investigate internet based crime and employing the latest techniques when conducting computer analysis.
