IntaForensics undertook a full forensic and procedural review to recover the data while complying with legal and platform-specific requirements. The following steps were taken:
Full file extraction and manual examination
We conducted a forensic extraction of both handsets to retrieve communications, media, and application data where available. A manual review of app activity helped assess which accounts and services had been in use.
Web-based account recovery attempt
We initiated login attempts via web-based versions of WhatsApp and Messenger, identifying the requirement for two-factor authentication codes delivered via SMS to the original SIM card.
Assessment of authentication options
We confirmed that no email addresses had been linked to the accounts and that the inactive SIM card was the sole route for account access recovery.
Coordination with telecoms provider
Under instruction from legal counsel, we facilitated communication with the relevant telecoms providers. With a court order in place, the operator agreed to temporarily reactivate the SIM to allow SMS receipt.
Successful account access and data retrieval
Once the SIM was live, we completed the authentication process, accessed both online accounts, and downloaded the full messaging histories. The extracted data was then reviewed, formatted, and presented in a report designed for clarity in court.
Our persistence ensured that the data, initially thought to be lost or inaccessible, was successfully recovered and contributed to the court’s understanding of the case.
