We offer two levels of Cyber Essentials certification:

Cyber Essentials vs. Cyber Essentials Plus

Prev Next

Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed certification scheme designed to help organisations protect themselves against common cyber threats. It provides a simple yet effective framework to secure IT systems, ensuring that businesses can safeguard sensitive data and maintain customer trust.

The scheme focuses on five key security controls that help prevent the most common cyber-attacks:

  • Secure Configuration – Ensuring systems are set up securely.
  • User Access Control – Managing user permissions to prevent unauthorised access.
  • Malware Protection – Safeguarding systems against viruses and malicious software.
  • Security Update Management – Keeping software and devices up to date.
  • Firewalls – Protecting networks from external threats.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommends Cyber Essentials as the minimum-security standard for organisations of all sizes.

This is a self-assessment certification where businesses complete a questionnaire covering the five security controls. This is then reviewed and certified by a qualified assessor.

Cyber Essentials Plus

Based on the same principles as Cyber Essentials, but with an independent technical audit to verify the security controls in place. This includes an internal vulnerability scan to ensure compliance with cyber security best practices.

To complete Cyber Essentials Plus, the Cyber Essentials self-assessment must have been completed within the last three months.

FAQ: What you need to know:

All new Cyber Essentials certificates issued by IASME will have a 12-month expiry date.

My organisation is not based in the UK. Can I obtain Cyber Essentials certification?

How quickly can I get certified to Cyber Essentials?

Once you have purchased Cyber Essentials with us, you will be given access to the IASME Portal system where you can complete the self-assessment. This currently consists of up-to around 90 questions, many of which are yes/no answers, to other questions requiring a descriptive answer or a list of devices within your organisation. Depending on whether you already have the required controls in place and how quickly you are able to complete the self-assessment, it is possible to get from application to certification within a matter of days, though for most applicants this will be longer.

What are the steps to get Cyber Essentials certified?

To get Cyber Essentials certified, you need to:

  • Choose a certification body.
  • Complete a self-assessment questionnaire.
  • Submit your questionnaire for review.

For CE Self-Assessment, prices are set by IASME depending on the organisation size.

If you will be completing the assessment on behalf of one of your customers/clients, please specify their details in the notes section of the checkout.

Are all in-scope devices tested as part of Cyber Essentials Plus?

No. The external vulnerability scanning is completed against all your public/internet-facing IP addresses. The internal testing is carried out against a representative sample of the devices in your organisation, based on what is in-scope of the Cyber Essentials self-assessment. This can include desktops, laptops, mobile devices and servers.

Can Cyber Essentials assessments be carried out remotely?

Yes, our assessors can conduct Plus assessment testing remotely or in-person, subject to arrangement.

Am I able to re-test if failing any of the Plus assessment tests?
